About JayAmi Sellers
JayAmi Sellers is a visual artist whose work embodies freedom and vulnerability through expressionism and abstract cultural art. Born in Gary, Indiana, and raised in Indianapolis, JayAmi discovered her passion for painting at age 13 and has spent over a decade refining her craft in acrylic painting. Since her first exhibition in 2018, she has steadily emerged in the Indianapolis art scene with her bold and evocative storytelling approach. Her exhibitions include solo shows such as Bloom at the Phoenix Theatre (2023) and Taboo Topic at The Creative Space (2018), alongside participation in group shows like Nourishing Well: Black Women and The Poetics of Sacred Space at Gallery 924 (2025) Nourishing Well: Black Women and The Poetics of Sacred Space at the Walker Legacy Center (2024) Legacy: Celebrating Black Voices and Power: Hoosier Women in Art at the Garfield Park Art Center.
Her creative journey has led her to illustrate the cover for The Esther Effect and co-author and illustrate the book Four Letter Word. Deeply inspired by nature and its metaphors, JayAmi creates paintings that explore themes of self-discovery, healing, growth, and love. Frequently featuring black women and plants as muses, her work draws parallels between the human journey and the cycles of nature—highlighting the beauty in rest, transformation, and blooming. She views art as a bridge between the personal and the universal, celebrating the interconnectedness of individual and collective narratives.
Guided by her motto, “…be true to yourself and intentional about the stories you tell,”JayAmi is dedicated to empowering young creatives to embrace their visions wholeheartedly, showing that art is more than a hobby—it’s a path to purpose and connection.
